Dogging: Smart Mobs Go Carnal
Posted by Clay Shirky
From Wired:
Dogging Craze has Brits in Heat:
"Dogging is the broad term used to cover all the sexual outdoor activities that go on," says the dogging FAQ at Melanies UK Swingers, a popular dogging site. "This can be anything from putting on a show from your car, to a gangbang on a picnic table."
[...]
Dogging sessions are usually organized through the dozens of dogging sites and message boards that have sprung up in the last couple of years. Photos are exchanged and meetings arranged by e-mail or mobile phone text message.
At the meet, cell phones and text messages are used to confirm meeting places and, crucially, identities. Cameras and videophones are increasingly used to record what goes on.
"Technology is vital and is the main driver (of the dogging phenomenon)," said Richard Byrne, a lecturer at Harper Adams University College in the United Kingdom who produced a survey (PDF) last year that found dogging to be a widespread and growing problem in Britain's country parks.
It is leading, predictably, to an increase in sexually transmitted diseases...

When people start moblogging from the dogging sessions, only the real exhibitionists will remain, and I believe they are not so many.

Dear Clay,
Permalink to CommentI was a bit suprised by your commentary note about sexual diseases. It's - unlike what we're used to from you - a bit out of context. I think Howard Rheingold would be thrilled - pun intended - to see smartmobbing used in yet another creative way. By the way, history of media shows time and again, that once technology is being used for sexual purposes, this often is the take-off point - pun not intended - for this technology.

As I point out in my 'blog there are security problems here, but they can probably be addressed if they are thought through.

The biggest problems would be of the 'mugger lures you to private spot' variety. I am also somewhat skeptical as to the sufficiency of the number of women who are into this. Sure there will be some, but I suspect that there are many more men.
Permalink to CommentAlso at some point this becomes a harassment issue for women. They need some form of protocol here (in the original sense of a set of formal conversation signals). Like the street walker's 'are you looking for business'? (Well thats what the code on the HBO special I saw).

There are a load of talkers out there that dont put up.
I am willing to hear from anyone genuine in the West Mids Kidderminster Worcester area and although I have been actively looking have only met one genuine couple.
