So I have become bored bored bored with the April Fool's stuff by and large, but I was struck by how much conceptual similarity the joke Jabber spec, Presence Obtained via Kinesthetic Excitation (POKE) bears to Matt Webb's Glancing.
I've been using Apple's iChat as my IM client for a while now, and am addicted to the gentle 'whuff' sound as users enter and leave presence-space, so while POKE is meant to be ridiculous, it's about 80% of the way to something real, something that both Webb and iChat are getting at -- relying on the limbic system for presence awareness.
Interesting first step - have your IM client have different sounds for people entering/leaving based on the groups you create in your buddy list. Might be confusing to the extent that 1 person might fall into more than 1 group...
I may be misreading the spec, but isn't it about determining the user's presence based on sensory data instead of keyboard and mouse activity? For example, it wouldn't be unreasonable to use a webcam as a motion sensor and keep the user's online presence "active" as long as the cam sees motion, even if there's no keyboard/mouse activity.
Whereas I think what you have in mind is something that informs you of other people's presence by reaching out and poking you...
