Orkut Media?
Posted by Ross Mayfield
Google launched Orkut Media and the response is a collective whaaa?
Columns on such topics as… A lick of poli-pop culture.
Advice on love, sex and things your parents never taught you.
He foams and froths so you don’t have to. Random thoughts on random things. It’s like cracking your knuckles, but better. … surely must mean something. A foray into content? The next evolutionary step of portal transmographication?
Probably not. Mark Pincus from Tribe says “It’s less than blogging and only available to people inside Orkut.” So true. But to satisfy our blog introspection and Google worship in one fell swoop, lets admit something. Not everyone will blog, more people will find an identity online through social networking through blogging and seeing how the masses are asses, what is offered to them will be dumbed down and pointless from our view. Oh, and don’t wait around for Blooglerkutmail.
Best explanation I can give for it is someone said, “that’d be cool,” and a couple of people agreed, which is cool in itself. Got any better ideas?

I think, like Microsoft, Google are a learning organization who'll throw out feelers in any direction to see what happens.
This doesn't look the slightest bit compelling, but it's probably cheap. And *something* may come out of it. Particularly if those involved were keen and pushing for it.

As someone who has followed orkut closely and anticipated great things from Google's entrance into the social networking space, I must admit that Orkut Media was yet another frustrating disappointment for me. It's just wrongheaded in so many ways that it's difficult to believe it comes from the smart minds of Googlers.
I've written up some detailed thoughts about Orkut Media here:

...and also posted a very detailed document I sent the orkut team here:

I feel compelled to point out, also, that the dupes who are actually using this monstrosity may be surprised to find that everything they post is also covered by the original orkut terms of service, which we already know are a problem.

Orkut has been unbearably slow for the last six months. I can't imagine how anybody puts up with it. Whenever I try to use it, I get server timeouts or just receive pages so slowly that I give up in disgust - it's the World Wide Wait all over again.

I have one question...
Permalink to CommentI can't check my messages from Orkut from a public library. Why is that? Is there someone out there that is 'smart' enough to work out all of the bugs, or is that just to big of a problem to work with now?
