sxsw & etech
Posted by David Weinberger
So the many2many crew divided at the 2. The boys went to etech and the girls went to sxsw. Coincidence? Not entirely. Embarrasing? And how.
One salient detail that didn’t strike me until after talking with danah a couple of nights ago: When I was contemplating submitting a paper to eTech, I called Rael Dornfest, the conference chair, to ask his advice about whether the topic would be better as a panel discussion or a one-person session. I forget what he said, and ultimately my paper was rejected, but the point is that because I know Rael a little (and I’m admirer, btw), I felt comfortable picking up the phone. I wasn’t thinking, “Hey, time to work the old boys network!” but that’s what I was doing.
Other than that, I don’t have anything to add to danah’s and Liz’s posts. But I didn’t want to my silence to be mistaken for disagreement.

I am on the advisory board for SXSW Interactive and have been for seven years. And I posted my salvo about women, conferences, Emerging Technology and so on here: http://www.girlwonder.com/archives/001122.html#001122
I wanted to respond more directly, though, to this comment. Last year, I spoke at ETech with my now former colleague, Michael Kieslinger. When we submitted our abstract for the talk, I dropped my friend Cory Doctorow a note as well. Is it the boys' network? Was Cory part of the reason Michael and I got accepted? Maybe, maybe not. But it didn't have to do with my gender or Cory's. I used my network in the way that you did, David.
(This year, O'Reilly didn't even send an invitation email for conference submissions or reduced cost of attendance. I assume this is just an oversight.)

"If you build a place that women love, the men will follow. The reverse is not true."
Do you agree with this sexist crap that Liz Lawley quoted approvingly? And if you really want to feel embarrassed, ask yourself what you're doing to address the systematic injustices behind this story.
What a pathetic lack of perspective.
