…With the caveats that Alexa’s data is not comprehensive—and even if they had perfect stats, “Alexa Rank” is still just one definition of popularity (a combination of reach and pageviews)—here’s the 10 most popular social media sites (with corresponding Alexa 100 rank):
I asked my 15-year-old stepdaughter the other day how she and her friends communicate and share info. The obvious ways, of course, are cell phones, text messaging on cell phones, and instant messaging.
She said Xanga isn't used much anymore. She said "everyone" now uses MySpace and Photobucket. She uses a web-based e-mail account to converse with other family members, but among school buds, e-mail is rarely used. Right now, living on the Internet for her and her friends involves IM, MySpace, and Photobucket.
She never heard of Flickr. She never heard of del.icio.us. I didn't ask her about RSS and tagging. I need to be more observant. It's interesting to watch her generation use technology, especially as a way to stay in touch with each other.
jr - I'm a sixteen-year-old. I can pretty much verify what your stepdaughter says. Except my friends don't really use much Photobucket. Xanga has gone down in use. Myspace is the big thing now. I don't particularly like it, but I use it for the connections. It's ugly, awkward to use, and slow.
I just recently discovered del.icio.us and Flickr. I love both of them.
Blogging in the teen/pre-teen years seems to have grown less popular. I use LiveJournal. Not many of my friends do. If they have a blog, it's a Xanga.
This is an interesting topic though. The fads that go through the teen society.
I don't see what the big deal with Myspace, LJ and all the apps on the list are (besides Flickr). Myspace seems to be some lame excuse to give kids something to call their website, and most of these are blog sites.
When I was 8, I was using Claris Homepage to build websites. Why is it that people these days have to go to some service that builds a site for them? It's not like it's hard at all.
When using Alexa data you have to factor in that it will not include people that use anti-spyware effectively or frequently dump the tracking cookies from their computers. So Alexa misses a lot of the tech savvy.
Where do you see tribe.net? Isn't it a lot better than Myspace, Orkut. A couple of months ago, a friend of mine showed me OKCupid. I haven't looked at it thorroughly, but it seemed to have a lot of similarities to Myspace.
I wonder what or who will survive and where standards possibly join. Right now you can add your Flickr photo stream to your tribe.net site. Or any blog you like, for that matter. Adding del.icio.us bookmarks has been utilitized by Tribe as well...
i have myspace. i love it but then i hate it!!
people are always saying it's so dangerous, yes it is. but it all depends on who the kid adds and who they talk too. they can make their profile private so only people they know can be on their ''friends list''. it's a great, fun way to communicate to your friends. it's aso a popularity contst to see hoe many comments and friends you can get. and these little girls posting half naked pictures of them is disgusting! i don't really have a point here... i don't see why everyone makes a big fuse about myspace
OK, on this list I see 10 web services where people write or publish for other people. Their diary, their images, their boomarks. Other people watch it, use it, read it. But, hey meeting these people, talking to them on the Web would be really social. The social software top 10 list is as "social" as the live cam top 10 list was "live" 10 years ago. Please, please add Web Mobs (http://www.webmobs.de) to this list. It shows real people on all Web pages.

I guess that list will be changing soon i am sure the alexa for the new MySpace is coming out with a new better version of there myspace site on another site named FriendWise starting early march it will be another social networking community site with alot more features. I guess to stay ahead of other sites like TagWorld and Facbook coming out like myspace.com also i heard it will be called www.FriendWise.com i guess well just have to see if FriendWise happens.
The new answer to myspace has arrived. Faster loading pages, better content layout, and so many new features you will wonder why you tried to find a way to make them work on there.

So the pattern seems to be: the higher the quality, the less ads, the more innovative the site is, the less popular. Go figure.

i don't understand why MySpace is so popular. It's pretty ugly and it's got lots of ads. But I'm pretty sure it's definitely not my demographic....

It's also worth noting that Alexa doesn't break out traffic for subdomains, such as 360.yahoo.com.
