AirTroductions

I spend too much time in airports and i can’t imagine i’m alone in this crowd. While i often like to get work done, i also like interesting interactions… or at least sane seatmates. Social software should be able to help but there are so many barriers to this. You need to articulate too much and who has time? Still, as broken as they are, i’m interested in exploring the tools that might lead to entertaining interactions or at least to the development of better systems to do so. One of the ones i’m curious about is AirTroductions. Yeah, it kinda has dating overtones to it, but i’m still curious if it’d ever work. At the very least, who else is en route to Etech or SXSW or IASummit when? I have to imagine that lots of folks i know will be passing through the same airports in the next month. Anyone else willing to give it a try just to see?

Danah:

Happy to help with your experiment - Let me know if you'd be agreeable - I'll create a code - say - "MANY2MANY" that'll give anyone from your site a free month on AirTroductions - just to see. My goal over time (keeping in mind, the site is still only 4 months old and already has over 10k users) is to grow the site through business and networking conferences - imagine the 175,000 attendees of CES networking BEFORE the conference even begins!

Thoughts?

And feel free to delete this comment, I just couldn't find an email address for any of you.

PPS: Hi Clay! :)

A lot of airlines are now putting broadband in the aircraft for use during the flights. There are loads of things you can do to communicate with people. An inflight chat room would be good. Taking casual strolls up and down the isle to see who you are most likely speaking with... or thrashing at chess etc.

Just saw that you are interested in seeing if other SXSW attendees are on the same flight on your way to the conference. Not sure if you saw that SXSW has partnered with Jambo Networks to help attendees discover when like-minded attendees are nearby. Just go to http://2006.sxsw.com/ or www.jambo.net to sign up for the SXSW group and download Jambo to your WiFi device. Since Jambo works even if you are offline, you can use it to automatically discover and message with other attendees at 30,000 feet in the air.
