MySpace and Deleting Online Predators Act (with Henry Jenkins)
Posted by danah boyd
Henry Jenkins (Co-Director of Comparative Media Studies at MIT) and i were interviewed by Sarah Wright of the MIT News Office about the proposed Deleting Online Predators Act (DOPA). Although they only used a fraction of our interview in the MIT Tech Talk, we decided to publish the extended version online. We feel as though our response provides valuable information for parents, legislators, journalists and technologists. It summarizes a lot of what both Henry and i have been trying to get across when interviewed by the media.
That is a good idea to get rid of online predators I think that we should do background checks on people 18 and old before they can get a myspace account that way it will be safer.
I'm a 16 year old girl who has a myspace, I thought i'd add a comment here... Well, checks wouldn't do much. It's easy for an adult to lie and put that they're 16 or 17, and that way they wouldn't have to do a background check. But another issue is sometimes it's KIDS who trick other kids into a bad situation. I've seen that a few times personally (through friends) where a guy will do anything jsut to get in a girls pants. It's insane. Myspace is safe- if people use it responsibly. In my opinion, it isn't always that easy for parents to watch what their kids do online. They can only be there so much and it's easy for them to create a myspace at a friends house, school or public library and the parents would never know.

I'm a 21 year old male and I have a myspace account. Hmm.. that almost sounds like something out of an A.A. meeting.
Sure, we all know it, MYSPACE.com has predators. I think too much focus it placed on this website though. The only reason so many predators are on there is because of the sheer quantity of members. Its not anymore saturated than any other place online.
Parents need to stop trying to limit my freedoms on the internet and they need to start teaching their kids about safety. It used to be "look both ways before crossing the street... Now, times have changed. Parents need to step up and take responsabiity and take action to help keep their children safe.
I have to submit a paper assuming that I am about to develop (start up) online platform such as myspace.com, youtube.com etc' and show what is the business model/revenue channels I would chose with statistics of what is the minimal traffic to start and sell ad's, how you value time spent on the net, an average subscriptions fees (is it a good strategy) and what are the alternatives for that...
long story short.... they expect me to build the entire financial/BP story.
I am looking for resources and beside of finding alternatives for SEO's and PPC's etc' I hardly can find it. I tried to look at public companies data but no luck...
I am sure its a simple easy (not accurate) "one page" info' but the I cannot put my hand on it...
in my oppion while myspace can be dangerous it can always be safe it all depends on the things like setting your profile to priviate meaning only the people you accept to be your friends can see the profile. If you DONT use it as a dating site. Most importantly if you dont give out personal information like last name where you live how old you are (say ur 100 and live in New York City) and make it where people can search for you, and dont use it as an IM site. I think if you are smart about bout it it is just as safe as ne other webpage.
Thanks so much for sharing your comments on "DOPA"! I appreciate your allowing me to share it with others...I just added a section to my website that dedicates a page to those creepy online predators. I'm anxious to post this on my site...it really puts a finishing touch on the dreadful topic. I do have a few comments too...you can check for sexual predators "that are registered"--at us dept of justice website...these will show only those that have been convicted and are required to register. I would imagine that some of them have done their business online too. I think if someone is reported enough times(we can report to cyber tip line)...they should have to register somewhere online as well...or perhaps have a listing of "barred chatters" at all chat site. However, Like Lee's valuable comment suggests...they could just lie anyway. We would just have to track their IP address and when they changed that it wouldn't be long before they started acting up again and we would track the new IP address. Maybe they would get the hint that many of the people on Myspace...or any chat room for that matter...don't want to put up with their crap! Just one last comment :() before I leave...yes kids can go to their friends or the library etc...but what it really boils down to is if you're trustworthy or not.

The most surprising thing about this article from a UK point of view is the rather casual comment "While email is still used to communicate with adults and authorities, MySpace is the primary asynchronous communication tool for teens."
To me this is a real cultural shift and shows how email has failed to deliver and has lagged behind other communications technologies, in the era of megaspam.
We do have huge MySpace usage over here but I don't think we're at the stage where it is the primary communications tool for young people. Perhaps it's just a matter of time.
I am 13 i agree that we should not be aloud on myspace i have watched alot of tv....here latly! and it is pretty bad what predetors do to lurur us kids i think myspace isnt safe i will Never get on it agian i hope young kids and adults understand what i am trying to say you should only get on it to talk to your friends not every bimbo who trys to talk you in to meeeting them!!!!!
im 16, and i have a myspace, and myyearbook, i know fist hand about online predators... he said his name was dane, he was 17, lived in calhoun kentucky. i checked his profile out because i saw and army rank. it all started when i found out he was in JROTC, so am i. we startd talking and it went from there. i trusted him, believed him...... i love him...... he said he loved me. it went pretty far, then someone i know wanted to do a background check, just to be sure about him. when she came to pick me up to work on my play, two words brought my whole world crashing in on..... he's 47.... i still cant breath. my head and my heart started having a war, needless to say, my hearts getting the shit kicked out of it, i was suicidle before but know, its gotten worse. it hurts..... real bad. protect your kids........

1. MySpace may (may) make it slightly easier for predators to find victims.
2. It is impossible to prove or quantify this enabling.
3. Predators will attempt to find victims anyway.
4. Closing down MySpace or limiting access to it will not stop predators.
5. Can you say "moral panic"?
6. Can you say "ignorance of the facts"?
7. Can you say "political punching bag"?

Background checks aren't free. If Myspace was forced to do background checks, free accounts would end for everyone.
I think it would be safer if parents took more responsibility for what their children do both online and offline.
